There are over 26 million people with disabilities in India. Almost all have little or no education.
For some children with disabilities, school is too far away from them to reach – others are denied admission; some are ridiculed for their perceived inabilities – while others are held back because, in their superstitious communities, their disability is considered a punishment for bad deeds committed in past lives. Whatever the reason – most are left feeling like a burden on society: worthless and ashamed.
With little hope of getting a job, many scrape a living through begging or prostitution, and are often victims of violence or abuse. They are the most vulnerable of India's citizens: stuck without education in a vicious cycle of poverty and lack of opportunity. These are nameless, invisible, untouchable individuals whom society casts aside and treats like trash. What a colossal waste of human capital.
For £8 per Month you can help to change that – and give a disabled child the chance of the better life they dream of.
Just £8 (12USD, 11EUR) is all it costs to keep a child with disability in school, adding up to £96 over the school year.
With an education, that child will have a chance of getting a job, and will become a productive member of society. Their drive to succeed means they will often surpass anything their poor families believed possible: many educated young people with disabilities become the main breadwinners.
Even more than that, having an education will give a person with disabilities self-esteem… the belief they are somebody… that they will achieve something in their lives.
“If I hadn’t been fortunate enough to receive an education from SKSN, I wouldn’t be in college today. Without an education, I know of disabled children who’ve been thrown out of their homes by their non-disabled brothers… that’s how people like us end up becoming beggars.”
Janak Singh – ex-student with bilateral paralysis
Through its partnership with SKSN Institute in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Indiability ensures that 100% of your money goes directly to placing a disabled child in school.
For over 20 years, SKSN has been providing quality education to hundreds of disabled children from rural communities – taking them from childhood to livelihood. They have an 88.5% and 98% track record in the 10th and 12th grade high school passes respectively, with 91% boys and 72% girls gaining University degrees and beyond. 96% boys and 83% girls have made it into full time employment or own businesses. Those that pass through their gates have had a real chance of changing their future.
“I was struck with polio when I was one year old, and I’ve always walked with a limp. But this never slowed down my studies… and thanks to SKSN, I have qualified as a medical doctor. I want more disabled people like me to have the same opportunities as I have had at SKSN.”
Dr Anuradha Rathore – student Alumni
SKSN offers a unique environment where all abilities, disabled and non-disabled, are integrated together, side-by-side, in classes, sports, and other extra-curricular activities – breaking down barriers and building mutual respect.
As an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), SKSN receives partial funding from the state government of Rajasthan, but in order to continue its mission to offer ever more places to students with disabilities, SKSN requires your help.
“I can’t imagine what would happen to me if I had to leave SKSN today. It would be the end of my educational life. I am disabled in both legs – there is no way I’d be able to crawl to my village school everyday.”
Uka Singh – student with bilateral paralysis.
When you first make your donation, you will receive information about a randomly selected student – their background, their hopes and ambitions for the school year ahead.
At the end of every school year, you will receive a letter from SKSN with a short update on their progress, aspirations for the year to come, and of course their appreciation. Indiability believes that your generosity is an opportunity for a personal connection with the child whose life you are about to change.
Make a child’s dream come true and Teach a Disabled Child that to dream is not in vain.
